How Much Does High Velocity Air Conditioning Cost? (Is It Worth It?)

High velocity air conditioning systems have gained popularity in recent years for their ability to efficiently cool spaces with limited ductwork options or where traditional HVAC systems may not be feasible.

In this detailed guide, we take you into the world of high velocity air conditioning, exploring:

  • What it is
  • Its advantages and disadvantages
  • High velocity air conditioning cost considerations
  • The importance of professional installation
  • Tips for proper maintenance

What is High Velocity Air Conditioning?

AC unit

High velocity air conditioning, also known as mini-duct or small-duct HVAC, is a cooling and heating system designed to provide comfort in spaces where traditional ductwork installation is challenging or impractical. Instead of large ducts, high velocity systems utilize smaller, flexible ducts with a diameter typically ranging from 2 to 4 inches. These ducts deliver cooled or heated air at a high velocity, allowing for effective temperature control even in areas with limited space for ductwork.

Pros and Cons of High Velocity Air Conditioning

If you’re considering high velocity AC systems for your home, it’s important to gather all the facts. We have the pros and cons that you should be aware of, below:

✅ Pros:

  • Space-saving design: High velocity systems require smaller ducts, making them ideal for retrofitting older homes or buildings with minimal disruption to existing structures.
  • Even temperature distribution: The high velocity of air delivery ensures uniform cooling/heating throughout the space, eliminating hot or cold spots.
  • Energy efficiency: Due to their smaller ducts and precise air delivery, high velocity systems can be more energy-efficient than traditional HVAC systems, resulting in lower utility bills.
  • Quieter operation: The smaller, insulated ducts help reduce noise levels compared to larger ductwork systems.
  • Better indoor air quality: High velocity systems often include advanced filtration options, improving indoor air quality by removing dust, allergens, and other pollutants.

❌ Cons:

  • Higher initial cost: The equipment and installation costs for high velocity systems can be higher compared to traditional HVAC systems due to the specialized components and labor involved.
  • Limited cooling capacity: High velocity systems may not be suitable for larger spaces or buildings with significant cooling/heating demands.
  • Regular maintenance required: Proper maintenance is crucial to ensure optimal performance and prevent issues such as airflow restrictions or leaks in the ductwork.
  • Professional installation needed: Installing a high velocity air conditioning system requires specialized knowledge and skills to ensure proper sizing, duct layout, and integration with existing infrastructure.

Cost of Installing a High Velocity AC System

The cost of installing a high velocity air conditioning system can vary depending on several factors, including the size of the space, existing ductwork infrastructure, equipment selection, and labor rates in your area. On average, the total cost, including equipment and installation, ranges from $10,000 to $20,000 for a typical residential installation.

Key cost components include:

  • Equipment: This includes the high velocity air handler, compressor unit, thermostat, and any additional accessories or components required for the system.
  • Ductwork: The cost of the ductwork depends on the size of the space, the complexity of the installation, and the type of material used (e.g., flexible or rigid ducts).
  • Labor: Professional installation by HVAC technicians is essential for ensuring the system is properly sized, installed, and configured for optimal performance.
  • Additional expenses: Permit fees, equipment delivery charges, and any necessary modifications to the existing electrical or structural components may also contribute to the overall cost.

It’s important to obtain multiple quotes from reputable HVAC contractors to compare costs and ensure you’re getting a fair price for the installation.

Installation Timeframe: 5 Things to Expect

The installation of a high velocity air conditioning system typically takes between 1 to 3 days, depending on the size and complexity of the project. The process involves several steps:

1) Site Assessment:

HVAC technicians assess the space to determine the best location for the air handler unit, compressor, and ductwork routing.

2) Ductwork Installation:

Flexible ducts are routed through walls, ceilings, or floors to deliver air to each room or area.

3) Equipment Installation:

The air handler unit and compressor are installed in the designated location, typically in a basement, attic, or utility room.

4) Electrical and Thermostat Wiring:

Wiring connections are made to power the system and connect it to the thermostat for temperature control.

5) Testing and Commissioning:

Once installed, the system is tested to ensure proper operation, airflow, and temperature control.

Professional Installation: Why It’s Essential

While DIY installation may be tempting to save money, installing a high velocity air conditioning system requires specialized knowledge and skills to ensure optimal performance and efficiency. Here are some reasons why professional installation is essential:

  • Proper sizing: HVAC professionals have the expertise to accurately size the system based on the specific cooling/heating needs of your space, ensuring optimal efficiency and comfort.
  • Ductwork design: Designing and installing the ductwork layout requires careful planning to minimize airflow restrictions, maintain proper air distribution, and prevent leaks.
  • Compliance with building codes: HVAC technicians are familiar with local building codes and regulations governing HVAC installations, ensuring compliance and safety.
  • Warranty protection: Many manufacturers require professional installation to validate warranty coverage, protecting your investment in the system.
  • Peace of mind: Professional installation provides peace of mind knowing that your system is installed correctly and will perform reliably for years to come.

Maintenance Tips for High Velocity Air Conditioning Systems

Regular maintenance is essential to keep your high velocity air conditioning system running smoothly and efficiently. Here are some tips to help you maintain your system:

Change Air Filters Regularly:

Dirty air filters can restrict airflow and reduce system efficiency. Check and replace filters every 1 to 3 months, or as recommended by the manufacturer.

Clean Supply Vents and Registers:

Remove dust and debris from supply vents and registers to ensure proper airflow and distribution throughout the space.

Inspect Ductwork for Leaks:

Periodically inspect the ductwork for any signs of leaks or damage, such as loose connections or tears in the duct material. Seal any leaks promptly to prevent air loss.

Schedule Professional Maintenance:

Schedule annual maintenance with a licensed HVAC technician to inspect the system, check refrigerant levels, lubricate moving parts, and perform any necessary repairs or adjustments.

Keep Outdoor Unit Clear:

Keep the outdoor compressor unit free of debris, such as leaves, grass clippings, and debris, to maintain proper airflow and prevent overheating.

Ethan was friendly and very informative. When he arrived, I made it clear that I was not interested in additional services, just the tuneup/inspection of my HVAC system. He went over the results and answered my questions with thorough explanations without trying to upsell me via a list of ’recommendations’, which I sincerely appreciated.

Our water heater went out on Fri evening. We called Aquarius early Sat morning and they said earliest they could get out was Mon. On Sun I received a text confirming our Mon appointment but on Mon morning they called and said the earliest they could get to us was the following week !We should be without hot water till then ? We are not a new customer…. 5 months previously we had a new furnace and air conditioner installed at quite an expense. I am appalled at their service or rather lack there of ! As an established customer they felt waiting approximately 10days without water was acceptable Bad, Bad, Bad !Two weeks later…The air conditioner Aquarius installed in Dec failed to cool when we turned it on on our 1st warm days. After the poor experience I had had with them I didn’t want to deal with them again but since it was under warranty I had to. We were told we would have a technician out Wed morning. After waiting at home all day they called and canceled at 4pm. We were rescheduled for Fri morning. We had several calls during the day with updates At 5:22 pm we received a cal the tech would be here at 6pm. We cancelled our dinner reservation and are awaiting his arrival.I realize our air conditioning is not an emergency but we have spent 2days waiting for our scheduled service. This is in addition to the 10days they wanted us to wait for a new water heater(which I do think is an emergency) I feel bad for the tech who I’m sure has had a long day and must now come at 6 on a Fri evening. Once again I repeat Aquarius has failed us again !!

Riley was the tech that performed our membership maintenance check-up. He did an outstanding job explaining what was included in the maintenance check-up. After his inspection, he was very detailed, using pictures, to help describe what he found and he made recommendations on what should be addressed now and what could wait until our next membership maintenance check-up. He was very thorough doing the repairs, cleaning impeccably both our furnace and air conditioner. We are going to request Riley for all our member maintenance check-ups going forward.

It's not much fun when your furnace goes out on New Years Eve with a forecasted minus 18 degree night approaching. Aquarius responded quickly, determined the furnace was not repairable, came the next morning (Saturday - New Years Day) to arrange a replacement which took place on Monday. They provided us with 4 space heaters which kept us above 60 degrees for the weekend. The installation of the new furnace was quick, professional and very neat. One could say they left us feeling very warm. All the Aquarius professionals we dealt with, Service, Sales and Installation, clearly took pride in the quality of their work. And, they offered a very generous Veteran's discount. Definitely 5 Stars.

Matt from Aquarius showed me photos of the furnace blower fan before and after he cleaned it. A dramatic diference. Moreover, he detected low (20%) humidity (not good for January) and showed us how to set the smat thermostat to increase it to 35% and lower the heating temperature. Excellent service and advice.Brandon was pleasant and efficient. Replaced a part under warranty. Great job.
