What is a Heat Pump?
Heat pumps stand out as an energy-efficient solution for both heating and cooling, offering a greener and cost-effective alternative to conventional systems. Whether you're considering an upgrade or new to heat pumps, our beginners’ guide has everything you need to know.

Why You Should Install a Heat Pump
Energy Efficient
Heat pumps work similarly to air conditioning units that use outside air and turn it into cool air, but in this case it’s warm air. Heat pumps take the outside air inside and reverse it to be warm, which can save you a ton of money on your monthly energy bills.
Work For Both Heating and Cooling
Additionally, since heat pumps work for both heating and cooling systems, that can offer you year-round savings. That’s a major benefit especially for larger homes that have their HVAC systems working at full capacity. The heat pump can help alleviate the burden, making all of your systems last longer and work more efficiently.
Long Life Span
Heat pumps, on average, last around 15 years. But with proper maintenance and installing a newer model could allow your heat pump system to last upwards of 25 years!
Low Maintenance
A neglected heat pump can work almost 25% less efficiently than one that is well maintained. Homeowners can do their own maintenance to ensure their system stays in good condition. But regular checks via a professional like Aquarius can also help prolong the life and efficiency of your heat pump.
Option to Go Ductless
Heat pumps can be installed without the use of ductwork. Learn More about Ductless Systems.

Heat Pump Maintenance
Proper maintenance is vital to the longevity of your system and keeping those energy bills low. To maintain your heat pump system you should:
- Keep the outdoor system clear of ice, snow, leaves, and other debris.
- Change your air filter frequently— in all of your HVAC appliances.
- Keep any bushes or nearby landscaping trimmed back and out of contact with your heat pump system.
- Keep the coils clean. You can do this by carefully using a coil brush or vacuum attachment. Do not use the hose or power washer to clean them. Just make sure they’re clear of dust and dirt.
Signs Your Heat Pump Isn't Working
Even with regular maintenance and high-quality installation, heat pumps can and will wear over time— causing them to run less efficiently than they should. If you notice any of the signs below, it might be time to repair or replace your heat pump.
- Weird sounds or smells coming from the unit
- The heat pump short-cycles
- Ice is accumulating on the unit during the winter
- Higher-than-normal energy bills
- Signs of leaks around the unit
- Only hot air is coming out
- Only cool air is coming out
