What Are Carcinogens and Are They in My Water?
When environmental or man-made substances are thoroughly tested and analyzed by a third-party and determined to cause cancer, they’re referred to as carcinogens (American Cancer Society). Common carcinogens that you might already know of include: asbestos, tobacco smoke, UV radiation, wood dust, and nickel compounds.
According to the ATSDR, coming into contact with certain carcinogens may not directly cause cancer, but the type of carcinogen, the amount you were exposed to, and the length of time you were exposed to it will all play a vital factor in whether or not you develop cancer.
Are Carcinogens in Water?
There are multiple ways a person can be exposed to carcinogens, such as air pollution, nutrition, household cleaning products (American Lung Association), UV tanning beds, chemical/factory fumes, etc. But now, according to the findings of a first-of-its kind study conducted by the Environmental Working Group (EWG) in 2019, we may also be exposing ourselves to certain carcinogens through our home’s tap water.
The Study’s Findings:
Using a cumulative cancer risk framework, the study analyzed water quality data, which excluded private wells, from over 48,000 communities across the United States: “The analysis revealed that the most significant impact on cancer risk came from arsenic, followed by byproducts of disinfection…The highest risk came from water systems that rely on groundwater and supply mostly smaller communities.” (Medical News Today). The findings suggest that the types of carcinogens found in drinking water may have also caused over a hundred thousand cancer cases across the country.
